I have to admit, I'm a bit of a latecomer to this whole design thing.
I have been a musician since I was 13, recorded 6 albums with 4 different bands, played hundreds of clubs--including the infamous CBGB in New York City, and am currently bass player with the band Porter on the Rat Pak Records label. On a separate creative track, I have published short fiction and poetry in a number of small press magazines. I graduated from the Odyssey Writing Workshop in 1997 and went on to become administrator for the program from 1998 to 2001. Helping with the promotion and marketing of the workshop, mainly flyers and direct mail, was my first taste of layout and design. From there, I found a job at the start-up weekly newspaper HippoPress in Manchester, NH. I designed ads, took photographs, created illustrations, and basically learned the craft on the fly with weekly absolute deadlines.
After a year and half in the thick of it, I had a show of my work in a local gallery and was part of a Hippo contributing artist show at the Millyard Museum in early 2003. Later that year, I left the Hippo to start a new weekly paper with three partners in Portsmouth, NH called The Wire. As Art Director, I have been challenged with maintaining a much higher creative level than at the Hippo while being in charge of finding new contributors and working with local talent. Designing ads, laying out the paper, creating cover illustrations, and finding art direction are all part of my duties. Meanwhile, I have been trying to branch out and find freelance work for projects that will push me forward as a better designer and illustrator. I have done story illustration for fiction writers and the national Science Fiction Writers of Earth Contest, designed CD packaging for Red Fez Records, and created poster art for local peace groups.
Take a look around my portfolio and send me an email. I'm always up for conversation, kudos, insults, or possible new jobs.
